Inheritance and a Cup of Coffee
From the Desk of the Executive Director
Like my father, I enjoy what a cup of coffee provokes—richness, boldness, and awakening. I’m not describing the taste, however, I’m talking about what comes with coffee.
The conversation you typically have with others, whether in the break room, a restaurant, or around the kitchen table provides the true memorable experience. Many of us drink coffee to awaken the senses and enjoy the rich, bold taste, but I’m convinced it’s the time spent with others enjoying that cup of coffee that makes it so enriching.
By the time I enjoyed coffee, my father had passed unexpectedly several years back and I missed all that came with it. I missed countless simple exchanges, thoughtful conversations, and lessons learned from the perspective of my father. While I inherited much wisdom, kindness, and love from my father during his lifetime, I am keenly aware the value of his time spent with me far exceeds any inheritance I could have received from his estate.
When thinking about your own plans for inheritance, consider the importance of memories made and lessons shared in one’s lifetime. Spend time today giving your children and grandchildren the most valuable asset—time. With all those assets you accumulate, establish a plan that will enrich the lives of your family and your community. Build a plan that demonstrates the values you hold and defines your passions and interests.
Warren Buffet, the famed billionaire investor, has already committed nearly all of his wealth to philanthropy. He is giving it away to charity. When asked if his children were upset over his decision, he responded by saying “If my children are competent, they don’t need my money. If they’re not, leaving them a lot of money is only doing them harm.” Spend your greatest of assets while you still can with the people you love. Read a book to your grandchildren, take your family to a Bombers ballgame (and donate to the League Stadium Endowment too), and experience the joys of giving, volunteering, and caring for your community with them. Make the most of your time and share it with your family while you still can. As for those assets you accumulate, work with your professional advisors or the Foundation to find meaningful ways to build an estate plan that exemplifies what really defines you. And please, enjoy the rich, bold, and awakening conversation that comes with your next cup of coffee.
